Rep. John Sarbanes (D-Md.) is fighting for a political system that works for everyone, not just big donors. Read his interview with The Intercept.
This whole thing is just ridiculous. I can out raise almost anybody, but it’s not the way we should go.

In February, Pelosi joined with her colleagues to introduce the Government By the People Act (HR 20), legislation that would go a long way to address the problem.

So Sarbanes and other reformers began to come at the problem from the opposite direction: magnifying the role of the small donor, rather than trying to diminish the role of the large donor. In February, Sarbanes sponsored a bill that tries to do just that, at least for congressional races.

A bill that “would help build a politics and a government that answer to the people. Together, we can reassert the full promise of our ideals and restore confidence in our democracy.”

Rep. Annie Kuster (D-NH) published an oped today in the Concord Monitor on the Government By the People Act: “Our bill would also present candidates with a viable alternative to the current campaign finance system. Under our plan, smaller contributions to candidates who attract significant grassroots support and forgo traditional political action committee funding would be matched at a six-to-one rate. In addition, candidates who opt to only accept smaller contributions would have their small donations matched at an even higher rate.”
