The fact is, we all should be working to overturn Citizens United and reduce the role of money in politics. And I guarantee you this: You reduce the role of money in politics, increase the level of civility – you will elect more women, more young people, more minorities, more LGBT community people to the Congress of the United States. It’s very important.
This whole thing is just ridiculous. I can out raise almost anybody, but it’s not the way we should go.

In February, Pelosi joined with her colleagues to introduce the Government By the People Act (HR 20), legislation that would go a long way to address the problem.

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi and Rep. John Sarbanes have this oped in the Washington Post on the new Government By the People Act. From The Atlantic:
To Pelosi, this isn’t a question of ability; women are quite capable of raising the money they need to run for office, she said. This is a cultural question: Expensive campaigns create a political environment that alienates women with families or other job prospects.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) appeared on “The Late Show with David Letterman” Tuesday night to deliver a top 10 list on “things you never knew about the House of Representatives.”

- House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, in a press conference on November 14th. She said “changing the role of money in politics” was a motivating factor for her decision to run for Democratic Leader again.
During her convention speech last night, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) talked about the need to reduce the influence of special interests in Washington, including calling for a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United. Here’s the transcript of the video above:
Our democracy is on the ballot. Democrats believe we must curb the influence of special interests on our political institutions. To change policy for the middle class, we must change politics. Democrats believe we must create jobs, not protect the special interests; build the economy from the middle out, not the top down. Democrats will work to overturn Citizens United. Republicans support opening the floodgates to special interest money and suppressing the right to vote. It’s just plain wrong. We believe in government of the many, not the privileged few.
What I would like to see in this election is a recognition that we must reduce the role of money in campaigns. So we want to win, move on to public financing of campaigns, overturn the Supreme Court decision on Citizens United, and – and, again, when we reduce the role of money in campaigns and increase the civility, we’ll elect more women to Congress.
