Ok, this is the best Congressional fundraising event we’ve seen in a while. (Via Sunlight Foundation)
Members of Congress worked about two and a half days this week–right after their five weeks off for August recess–and boy do they need to unwind with some fundraisers. Here are this weekend’s events, via Sunlight Foundation’s Political Party Time:
- Join Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) in Nashville for a “Music City Weekend.”
- For $1,500 (individual) or $3,000 (PAC), you can join Senator Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) for a “New Hampshire Weekend.”
- Rep. John Runyan’s (R-NJ) BBQ and Lobsterbake in Barnegat Light, NJ is priced a little more reasonably–you can get in for just $200. Don’t worry, big spenders, the campaign will accept $1,000 to be a “campaign friend” or $2,600 to be a “campaign sponsor.”
- The Harvest Day BBQ for Rep. Mike Thompson (D-Calif.) is even more reasonably priced: just $20 gets you in the door at his event back home.
A fancy weekend trip for Congressman Jeb Hensarling and his friends on Wall Street:
“In January, Rep. Jeb Hensarling, R-Texas, ascended to the powerful chairmanship of the House Financial Services Committee. Six weeks later, campaign finance filings and interviews show, Hensarling was joined by representatives of the banking industry for a ski vacation fundraiser at a posh Park City, Utah, resort.
"The congressman’s political action committee held the fundraiser at the St. Regis Deer Valley, the “Ritz-Carlton of ski resorts” known for its “white-glove service” and for its restaurant by superstar chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten.”

It’s a recess on Capitol Hill, which means it’s time to enjoy weekend outings with members of Congress—if you can afford the asking price.

At least five U.S. Senators are scheduled to hold fundraising events this weekend, with just two in their home state, according to invitations obtained by the Sunlight Foundation’s Political Party Time website.
Scott Prouty, the man behind the infamous Mitt Romney 47 percent video, told Ed Schultz last night why he released the video and we couldn’t agree with him more:
He said he felt that people who couldn’t afford to attend a high-priced fundraiser should get a chance “to find out what the candidate actually thinks.”
Weekend Going Out Guide: Fundraiser Edition
“It’s a cold gray February in Washington, so why not spend your weekend golfing in Florida, skiing in Wyoming, or wining and dining in New York City? A few members of Congress (and at least one candidate) are spending some time this weekend raising campaign cash—and you can join them for just a few thousand bucks.”
The fundraising never stops in Washington. These lobbyists are trying to influence this debate and there’s no better way to make your case than by handing over a $1,000 check to a Member of Congress.

Last night, President Obama attended his last fundraising event of the 2012 cycle. It was the 220th such event since announcing his re-election in Spring 2011.
K Street Still On Board the Akin Train?
While many congressional Republicans have been tripping over themselves to get away from Missouri Senate candidate Rep. Todd Akin ®, a fundraising invitation obtained by Sunlight Foundation shows that K Street lobbyists may not share the same concerns.
He has three events scheduled in Washington, D.C. next week–a lunch and reception on Wednesday, October 3rd, and breakfast on Thursday, October 4th.
